This image symbolizes the conditions in which child laborers must live. The bars, similar to that of a jail cell, display the similarities between a corrupt prison and a child laborer's living conditions. Like a corrupt prison, a child is forced to live in a confined and dirty space, given little to eat, are susceptible to illness, and are subject to various forms of abuse. Look closely at the child in this photo, and you will notice how thin he is, the dirt smudge across his nose, and the hurt in his eyes. We don't know his name, his age, or if his parents even know where he is; he could easily be a victim of transnational, domestic or overseas trafficking. This photo would do well in showing public how alone and upset a child laborer is, and it enables the public to get a clear depiction of the child's sense of helplessness. These children often fear that they will always be stuck in these conditions and nobody can help them.
This image would appropriately symbolize the key components of child labor, but it lacks the ability to show the number of children subject to such awful conditions. Likewise, it neither shows the variety of places containing child labor nor does it show the range of children affected by it. Most people assume that child labor only affects poor children in impoverished countries, but the truth is that age, race, ethnicity, and social class doesn't matter to the "employers". I also want to point out, once again, that this "employment" is BONDAGE SLAVERY in that the "employers", better labeled as the SLAVE MASTERS, force the children to continue working for them, and only them, until the children-- they are SLAVES-- repay their debt of food and shelter which continually accumulates to an impossible amount to reach. Such "employment" is considered illegal in virtually every country in the world yet it still continues each day.
